A little over a month ago, I went to California to help my sister transform a room in her home from what was at the time, a storage place where miscellaneous stuff was put, into a nursery for my nephew Weston who made his arrival right after Easter.
I don't have a before picture because I forgot to take one, but the room was a primary yellow and red with white trim all around.
My sister found the jungle print fabric at JoAnn's and had made curtains for all the windows. We picked out a buttercream yellow for the top of the walls and a dark chocolate brown for the bottom.
On one wall, near the chair where my sister nurses my nephew we hung 3 white bead-board frames with old photos in them. The old photos are of my BIL when he was a baby and toddler. The empty frame will have an old photo of my sister in it. The blue book rack was red and we just repainted it blue and put an assortment of books for my sister and BIL to read to my nephew.
This old photo is my BIL with his grandfather at the beach.
The basket at the base of the crib houses quilts and receiving blankets.
A mobile of jungle animals
Do you remember the cross-stitch squares I was doing for a family quilt? The finished quilt is draped over the back of the crib.
The lamps. We covered the lampshades with 4 different patterned papers which coordinated with the jungle theme. We trimmed the edges with a zebra print ribbon.
My sister and I created wall art to hang on the wall with the dresser and changing table. We created a collage of photos which feature old photos of my BIL and of their bulldogs. In the blank spaces will hang old pictures of my sister as a kid and pictures of my nephew. We got open-backed plain wooden frames from Michael's which we painted blue. We put eye hooks in them and strung picture wire across.
I scanned old photos and converted them into vintage Polaroids. We clipped the Polaroids to the wires with clips from Ikea. On either side of the photo collage frames are framed animals. We painted each of the frames a color to match the scheme of the room, covered the glass with a patterned fabric, and created 3-dimensional art by adhering baby jungle animals that had been printed on canvas paper with pop dots.
All the fabrics were found at JoAnn's. The animals are part of Mindy Terasawa's Jungle Gym Stickers set which can be found at Designer Digitals.
Not pictured are antique drawers which were built with the house back in 1910. They are in the closet and had been painted numerous times. My BIL stripped the drawers down to the wood and had stained them to match the crib, dresser, and changing table.
It was fun to transform the room into a space for my little nephew to grow up in.
And just who is this little nephew I speak of? Here is a little peek . . .
Will share a few more when I get his session completed.
